The Terrace Writers’ Guild is excited to announce the winners of the 2007 TWG Fiction Contest:
1st Prize: Oliver, by Jen Brubacher, Terrace, BC | $125.00 and paid publication in the Feb/Mar 08 issue of Northword (Read her winning entry, “Oliver”).
2nd Prize: Weight, by Mike Carson, Prince George, BC | $100.00 and a UNBC mug (every writer needs his or her caffeine!)
3rd Prize: Neighbours, by Barbara Cameron, Courtenay, BC | $50.00
With such varied and interesting stories to consider, the judges had a difficult time agreeing on their top three. Each story found its own advocate among the judges, but ultimately Oliver emerged as the winning story due to its originality and ability to leave a lasting impression with the reader. Weight was praised for its unique evocation of a universal theme, and Neighbours for its characterizations and its ending.
TWG would like to express huge appreciation to the contest’s co-sponsors, The University of Northern BC, SAZ Communications, and Northword Magazine for valuing the writing craft and for encouraging emerging writers. TWG also extends much gratitude to the contest’s three judges: Brenda Silsbe (author), Simon Thompson (poet and Northwest Community College (NWCC) English professor), and Dina Von Hahn (NWCC instructor) for generously giving their time to help recognize the writing art.
And for making the first ever TWG fiction contest a great success, the Terrace Writers’ Guild says a big thank you to all who entered. There were 24 submissions from all over northern BC and a few from other places, including Vancouver Island, Surrey, and even Bath, Pennsylvania!
Sharpen your pencils, and warm up your keyboards: the Second Annual TWG Fiction Contest will open for submissions May, 2008.
